Every athletics club says it develops athletes. Very few can prove it with data. The clubs that track performance systematically can show an under-13 athlete their progression over three seasons, identify when a middle-distance runner plateaued and link it to a training change, demonstrate to parents that the coaching programme is delivering measurable improvement, and provide coaches with the information they need to individualise training.

Performance tracking in athletics is simultaneously easier and harder than in most sports. Easier because athletics is fundamentally about measurable outputs: times, distances, and heights. Harder because the sheer variety of events, the importance of conditions (wind, surface, altitude), and the multiple competition formats create a complex data landscape. A club with 200 members competing across 20-plus events generates thousands of data points per season.

Core Data Capture

Your tracking system is only as good as the data you put into it. Define what you capture and how it enters the system.

Competition Results

Competition results are the primary data source. For every competition performance, capture the event, the result (time, distance, or height), the wind reading (for sprints up to 200m and horizontal jumps), the timing method (hand or FAT), the competition name and date, the venue, and whether the performance was a PB. The most efficient way to capture competition results is to pull them from Power of 10, which aggregates results from all England Athletics licensed competitions. This should be your first data source for every competition.

Training Performances

Training performances are harder to capture systematically but are valuable for tracking progression between competitions. Coaches should record key training metrics such as time trial results, throwing distances in training, jump heights in practice, and any benchmark tests used in the training programme. The challenge is making this recording easy enough that coaches actually do it. A phone-based entry form that takes 30 seconds per athlete per session is realistic. A paper logbook that requires transcription later is not, because it will not happen consistently.

Data Quality Standards

Set standards for data entry. Times must include hundredths of seconds for FAT and tenths for hand timing. Distances must be in metres to two decimal places. Heights must be in metres to two decimal places. Wind readings must be recorded as positive (tailwind) or negative (headwind) values. Inconsistent data entry undermines the entire system because you cannot compare a time recorded as 12.5 with one recorded as 12.50 if your system treats them as text strings rather than numbers.

PB Alerts and Recognition

Personal best alerts are the single most motivating feature you can build into a performance tracking system. When an athlete achieves a new PB, the system should flag it immediately.

Automated PB Detection

When a new result is entered, the system compares it against the athlete's existing PB for that event (with appropriate conditions: wind-legal only for sprints and horizontal jumps, FAT compared to FAT and hand compared to hand). If the new result is better, it triggers a PB alert. This alert should be visible to the athlete, the coach, and optionally to the wider club through a PB wall or news feed.

PB Walls and Social Recognition

A PB wall, whether physical in the clubhouse or digital on the club website, is a powerful motivational tool. List recent PBs with the athlete's name, event, performance, and date. Update it weekly during the competition season. This public recognition drives engagement and creates a positive competitive culture. Athletes want to see their name on the wall, and they train harder to get there.

Milestone Alerts

Beyond PBs, set milestone alerts for performances that approach qualifying standards for county, area, or national championships. An alert when an athlete is within five percent of a qualifying standard gives the coach time to target that standard in training and gives the athlete a concrete goal. Similarly, alert when an athlete achieves a significant age-graded percentage (such as reaching 60, 70, or 80 percent) or moves into the top rankings for their age group on Power of 10.

Progression Charts and Trend Analysis

Raw results tell you what happened. Progression charts tell you whether the athlete is improving, plateauing, or declining, and they help coaches understand why.

Season-on-Season Progression

Plot an athlete's best performance in each event for each season. A healthy development trajectory for a junior athlete shows steady improvement year on year, with the rate of improvement gradually slowing as they mature. A sudden plateau or regression may indicate overtraining, growth-related changes, motivation issues, or a training programme that needs adjusting. Without the chart, the coach is relying on memory and impression. With the chart, the conversation is grounded in data.

Within-Season Trends

Plot every competition performance within a season chronologically. This reveals whether the athlete is peaking at the right time (improving toward the championship period), whether they are performing consistently, or whether there is excessive variation that might indicate inconsistent preparation or competition anxiety. For endurance events, overlay training volume data to look for correlations between training load and race performance.

Age-Graded Progression

For junior athletes who are growing and maturing, raw performance improvements can mask stagnation or hide genuine breakthroughs. A 14-year-old boy who runs 12.0 seconds for 100 metres and then runs 11.8 as a 15-year-old may have improved purely because of physical maturation rather than training gains. Age-graded progression strips out the maturation factor and reveals whether the athlete is actually developing their athletic ability. This is particularly important for coaches tracking early developers who may show rapid raw improvement that flatlines once their peers catch up physically.

Power of 10 Integration

Power of 10 is the backbone of athletics performance data in the UK. Any tracking system should integrate with it, either through automated data feeds or manual reconciliation.

A club that can show it has five athletes in the national top 100 for their age group is demonstrating development pathway effectiveness.

Multi-Event Points Tracking

For combined event athletes, points tracking is essential. The World Athletics scoring tables convert individual event performances into points, and the total determines the athlete's combined event score.

Component Event Analysis

The real value of points tracking is in analysing the breakdown. If a heptathlete scores 4,500 points, knowing that 900 come from the 200 metres, 750 from the high jump, and 500 from the javelin immediately tells the coach where the biggest gains are available. Points tables are non-linear, meaning the first 100 points in an event are easier to gain than the last 100. A simple analysis of points per event, plotted against the maximum available, reveals the optimal training allocation for points improvement.

Performance tracking is not about surveillance. It is about giving athletes and coaches the data to make informed decisions, celebrate genuine progress, and target development where it will have the greatest impact.
